How to Get Thunder Surge in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
If you're early in a playthrough and wondering what to meld first, this is a good answer. Every Thunder
Surge recipe works for all three characters, three of the four can't fail, and the ingredients are
things you'll pick up without going out of your way. It's a solid lightning dash on its own, and five
other commands use it as an ingredient, so having a spare around is never wasted.
How to Meld Thunder Surge (All Known Recipes)
Every recipe uses Thundara as the second ingredient. If you've got a Thundara
sitting in your deck, you can probably make one right now:

With three guaranteed options on the table, there's no point rolling the 95% one unless Confusion
Strike is honestly the only thing you can spare.
Which Crystal Should You Use?
Four recipes means you get to farm the ability you actually want instead of accepting whatever the
game hands you.
Fire Dash + Thundara or Freeze Raid + Thundara with a Pulsing Crystal gives Leaf Bracer. Two separate can't-fail recipes both drop Leaf
Bracer, which makes this one of the easier ways to pick it up. No more getting knocked out of a Cure
halfway through.
Stun Edge + Thundara or Confusion Strike + Thundara with a Fleeting Crystal gives Magic
Haste. These two recipes have identical ability sets, so treat them as the same thing
and use whichever ingredient you care less about.
Those same two recipes give Thunder Boost on a Shimmering Crystal if you're building
a lightning deck.
Small thing that might matter to you: Fire Dash + Thundara is the only route that gives Combo Plus on
a Wellspring Crystal. The other three all give Air Combo Plus instead. Worth checking if you're
building around ground combos specifically.
Commands That Use Thunder Surge as an Ingredient
This is the real reason to keep a spare. Five commands need it:
- Sonic Blade, from Fire Dash + Thunder Surge, for all three characters
- Lightning Ray, also from Fire Dash + Thunder Surge, all three characters
- Spark Raid, from Thunder Surge + Dodge Roll, Ventus
- Thunder Roll, also from Thunder Surge + Dodge Roll, Ventus
- Payback Surge, from Sliding Dash + Thunder Surge, Aqua
You probably noticed the duplicates there. Fire Dash + Thunder Surge can give you
either Sonic Blade or Lightning Ray, and Thunder Surge + Dodge Roll can give you
either Spark Raid or Thunder Roll. Same ingredients, two possible results. Run it through the
simulator first if you're aiming at one specifically.
Want to Test Your Melding Path?
If you'd rather not find out the hard way, the Command Melding Simulator lets you check
the result and the ability before you spend anything.
Thunder Surge is about as low-risk as this system gets. Guaranteed recipes, works for everyone, useful in
a fight, and five other commands want it. Make one early and you'll be glad you did.
