These are the commands worth planning your melds around in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. Each entry below gives you the recipe to actually use, the crystal worth bringing, and a link to the full guide with every alternate recipe, all seven crystal abilities, and the build chain.

Start Here: The Three Essentials

If you build nothing else, build these. All three work for Terra, Ventus and Aqua, all have guaranteed recipes, and each one carries one of the game's best passive abilities.

• Curaga is the strongest heal in the game and an ingredient in eleven other recipes, more than anything else. Meld Cura + Cura (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance. Cure is sold in shops from the first world, so you can start immediately.
• Stopga freezes every enemy on screen and gives you free hits. Meld Stopra + Stopra (100%) with a Wellspring Crystal for Once More. The whole chain builds from shop-bought Stop.
• Renewal Block or Renewal Barrier is the cure-based block. Meld Curaga + Block (Terra and Ventus) or Curaga + Barrier (Aqua), both 100%, with an Abounding Crystal for EXP Walker. Easily the cheapest route to it.

Best Physical Commands

• Sonic Blade closes distance instantly and keeps hitting. Meld Blitz + Air Slide (90%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance. For Terra it also unlocks Chaos Blade, Zantetsuken and Ars Solum.
• Thunder Surge is the easiest strong command in the game. Meld Fire Dash + Thundara (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Leaf Bracer. Five other commands use it as an ingredient.
• Fire Surge has four guaranteed recipes and feeds six later commands including Aerial Slam and Dark Haze. Meld Fire Dash + Ignite (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Leaf Bracer.
• Blitz is the ingredient behind Sonic Blade, Ars Arcanum, Triple Firaga and Magic Hour. Meld Quick Blitz + Slot Edge (90%). Slot Edge is bought from shops.
• Time Splicer (Ventus and Aqua) stops time and cuts through a target repeatedly. Meld Aerial Slam + Stopga (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance. Its three other recipes are not worth the crystals.
• Magic Hour (Aqua only) is a wide sweeping attack, and it is physical despite the name. Meld Barrier Surge + Aeroga (90%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance.

Character-Exclusive Finishers

• Ars Arcanum (Ventus) is his best physical finisher. Meld Blitz + Aerial Slam (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance. It has eight other recipes at 5 to 10%, and every one of them is a trap.
• Ars Solum (Terra) is his equivalent, and the hardest command on this site to get. There is no guaranteed recipe, 20% is the best available, and all three of its recipes compete with a likelier result: Chaos Blade at 90% or Zantetsuken at 80%. Expect to collect it while building those.
• Chaos Blade (Terra) hits hardest of his physical commands. Meld Dark Haze + Sonic Blade (90%) with a Wellspring Crystal for Once More.
• Salvation (Ventus) damages a wide area and heals him at the same time. Meld Wind Raid + Curaga (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance.
• Faith (Ventus) is guaranteed to meld, but needs a Break Time, which has no reliable recipe and is better found than farmed. Meld Wind Raid + Break Time (100%).

Best Magic Commands

• Mega Flare is the strongest offensive magic in the game and has exactly one recipe: Fission Firaga + Crawling Fire (100%). Bring a Wellspring Crystal for Once More. The build chain behind it is five steps long.
• Meteor (Terra) drops rocks across the battlefield. Meld Geo Impact + Quake (100%) with a Wellspring Crystal for Once More. Its two Brutal Blast recipes are 10% and not worth chasing.
• Triple Blizzaga (Aqua) has three guaranteed recipes and feeds the Deep Freeze and Glacier chain. Meld Blizzaga + Blizzaga (100%) with a Pulsing Crystal for Second Chance.
• Triple Firaga (Aqua) fires three homing blasts instead of one. Meld Firaga + Firaga (90%) with a Wellspring Crystal for Once More, or Fira + Firaga (95%) if you just want the command.
• Dark Firaga (Terra) has two guaranteed recipes with different rewards. Firaga + Blackout gives Once More on Wellspring; Dark Haze + Firaga gives Leaf Bracer on Pulsing.
• Seeker Mine (Aqua) sends homing mines after enemies. Meld Mine Shield + Mine Square (100%) with a Wellspring Crystal for Once More.
• Thundaga Shot (Aqua) fires a stream of lightning. All three recipes are 85% and all three give Magic Haste on a Fleeting Crystal. No recipe offers Once More or Second Chance.

Useful Ingredients Worth Building

These are not headline commands, but a lot of the list above depends on them.

• Mine Shield and Mine Square: four guaranteed recipes each, and both give Leaf Bracer on their universally available routes. Between them they feed Seeker Mine, Ice Barrage, Brutal Blast and Quake.
• Geo Impact (Terra): needs two Brutal Blasts at 70% each, and is the only sensible route to Meteor. Pulsing gives Second Chance.
• Quake (Terra): shares ingredients with Brutal Blast and Geo Impact, so read its page before melding. Brutal Blast + Zero Graviga (90%) with a Wellspring Crystal gives Once More.

Tips for Efficient Melding

• Level each command to max before melding, because the passive ability unlocks permanently on the leveled copy, so you keep it even after the command is consumed.
• Pulsing Crystals are your priority early: they give Second Chance and Leaf Bracer on the most accessible recipes.
• Wellspring Crystals give Once More and Combo Plus: stock them for mid and late-game melds.
• Watch for pairs that produce two different commands. Dark Haze + Sonic Blade, Firaga + Stopga, Stun Edge + Mine Shield and several others each have two possible results at different odds.
