How to Get Renewal Block and Renewal Barrier in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
These are the cure-based defensive commands, a Block or Barrier that heals you when you use it. Same idea
split across characters: Renewal Block for Terra and Ventus,
Renewal Barrier for Aqua. All four recipes between them are guaranteed, and two of
those are one of the friendlier ways to pick up EXP Walker.

It's the same pattern for everyone. Curaga or Esuna, plus whichever defensive command your character
uses. None of it can fail.
Which Crystal Should You Use?
Curaga + Block or Curaga + Barrier with an Abounding Crystal gives EXP
Walker. This is the headline. EXP Walker levels you up just from walking around,
and both Curaga recipes hand it over. Since these melds can't fail and the ingredients aren't rare,
it's one of the least painful ways to get it.
Those two Curaga recipes have the same ability set as each other across both characters: Dark Screen
on Shimmering, Magic Haste on Fleeting, Combo F Boost on Pulsing, Air Combo Plus on Wellspring, Item
Boost on Soothing and Treasure Magnet on Hungry.
The Esuna recipes are where the characters split:
- Esuna + Barrier for Aqua gives Second Chance on
Pulsing, plus Cure Boost on Shimmering and Defender on Soothing. A strong alternative if EXP
Walker is already handled.
- Esuna + Block for Terra and Ventus gives Finish Boost on Pulsing and HP Boost on
Soothing. Perfectly fine, just less exciting than what Aqua gets.
Level the command before melding it away if you want to keep the ability.
Commands That Use Renewal Block / Barrier as an Ingredient
Both feed the same two commands when you pair them with another Curaga:
- Slot Edge, from Curaga + Renewal Block or Renewal Barrier, 90%
- Break Time, from Curaga + Renewal Block or Renewal Barrier, 10%
Careful here, because the same pair gives both results. You'll get Slot Edge nine
times out of ten and Break Time the rest, so chasing Break Time specifically means repeating the
meld a fair few times. The consolation is that Slot Edge is useful anyway, since it's part of the Blitz recipe. A failed Break Time attempt isn't wasted.
Want to Test Your Melding Path?
The Command Melding Simulator will show you which ability you're getting before you spend
a Curaga on it.
These two are easy to skip past because they're defensive commands rather than something flashy. Don't.
Four guaranteed recipes, ingredients you'll already have, and a clean route to EXP Walker make them some
of the more practical melds in the game, whichever character you're playing.
